Religious diversity is a constant feature of human societies. When the very existence and the understanding of this diversity become the subject of contestation, as has been the case in contemporary societies, we can speak of the challenges of religious pluralism. The [2009 conference of the ISSR] seeks to contribute to the sociological analysis of religious pluralism and its common understandings. The conference will include a wide range of possible approaches and will pay particular attention to both the ways in which religion adapts to the context of religious pluralism and to the ways in which contemporary societies respond.

WGT 4: RELIGION IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE // LA RELIGION EN EUROPE CENTRALE ET DE L'EST.

The panel will contain the presentations of the researchers of the REVACERN (Religion and Values in Central and Eastern Europe Research Network), an international scientific network, based on their final scientific results in the fields of: 'Religion and Nation', 'Religious pluralism and value pluralism', ‘New Forms of Religion and NRMs’, 'Religion, Churches and CSOs'; 'Religion and Gender', 'Societal actions and motivations', 'Religion in the media', 'Role of symbols'; 'Interreligious Dialogue'; 'Religion and Education’ and finally ‘Orthodox Europe’ with special regard to the religious situation in CEE. Theories of religion in CEE will also be covered focusing on the regional characteristics. Proposals from outside scholars are most welcome.
